Artist History
Curtis Clay

Curtis Clay has been singing in front of people since he was eight years old and he doesn't plan on stopping any time soon. It all started in a little ole church in a very small Texas town and it was truly just the beginning. By the time he was in high school, he was the lead singer for a gospel group that opened concerts for all of the major Gospel acts that came through Austin, Texas at the time. Shirley Caesar, The Mighty Clouds of Joy and The Williams Brothers are just a few of the performers that he shared the stage with during this time in his life. He attended Sul Ross State University and continued performing as a solo singer and things really started to happen for him. He opened for everyone that came through the small college town, including Texas Legend Tish Hinejosa. He got married during this time and he and his wife Annette had their first child and headed to California. Curtis continued to sing and write his songs and developed a loyal following in southern California performing several nights a week. This is during the time that he met legendary lead singer Ali Ollie Woodson of the Temptations, and was given the opportunity to perform the classic "My Girl" on stage with the Temps on numerous occassions. Curtis has performed for the live audiences of several TV shows, including The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Living Single and The Arsenio Hall Show. He's performed the National Anthem for both the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers, as well as the San Diego padres on several occassions. In 1995 Curtis was voted Top Male Vocalist in the state of California on the Amateur level at that time. After meeting with many record company A & R representives and not getting the deal that he desired, he had to take a long look at himself and his music and figure out what it was that set him apart from everybody else. One A & R Rep told him "that his pockets should be fat as a writer alone, but it' just not what we're looking for. I really hear some county in all of your soulfulness".That truly opened his eyes to who he really is. He and his family of six headed back home to heart of the Lone Star State. After several years of performing all around the world with a well known vocal group, his debut solo album is finally here. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Country Soul of Curtis Clay.

"Country Soul" Review by RadioIndy
POSTED BY: radioindy POSTED ON: 01 Apr 2007 04:02 AM
"Country Soul" is a powerful collection of songs that cross a number of genres, including country, R&B, and pop. In crossing several genres while highlighting Curtis' strong vocals, the CD underscores one of the advantages of making a CD without the constraints of a big recording label. Curtis' memorable vocals remind us of Lionel Richie, although most of the songs are of a more country style. The solid songwriting provides hook-filled choruses and counter-melodies. The lyrics are well thought out, reflecting on life and love. If you enjoy hearing a talented vocalist sing powerful country, pop, or R&D songs, you will enjoy this CD. Pick up a copy today!
