Andy Findon from England

Artist History

Andy Findon is a Pearl Flutes International Artist

Andy’s background of mixed musical experience has led to an incredibly diverse career. Having trained as an orchestral flautist, as principal flute of the National Youth Orchestra in the early 1970’s and 3 years at the Royal College of Music, he soon branched out into the London musical scene, from dance band dates (working for Nat Temple, Joe Loss, Eric Delaney & Sidney Lipton among others) to Ballet Rambert, taking in The National Theatre and the formation of the Myhra Saxophone Quartet with John Harle. He soon found work in the thriving “session” world and was busy depping in the London orchestras and on numerous West End shows. An interest in “ethnic” instruments seemed to fit well alongside work as both an orchestral flautist and a commercial “woodwind doubler”. He has played with an enormous list of renowned artists, including, Phillip Glass, Don Sebesky, Hans Zimmer, Phil Ramone, Angela Morley, Danny Elfman, Brian May, Guy Chambers, Randy Edelman, Terence Blanchard, John Williams, Stanley Myers, Richard Blackford, Anne Dudley, David Arnold, Christopher Gunning , Michel Legrand, Howard Goodall, Stephen Warbeck, Carl Davis, Elmer Bernstein, Rachel Portman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Vince Mendoza, Craig Armstrong, Johnathon Tunick, Michael Nyman, George Fenton, among many more.

The early 80's saw the start of work with the "Michael Nyman Band", with whom he still tours and records, and a most enjoyable period as a member of the folk-rock band, "The Home Service", recording albums with them and appearing at leading folk festivals. He is also associated with John Wilson, in who’s orchestra he plays principal flute and also sits on the baritone chair in his big band. Andy is principal flute of The National Symphony Orchestra, and works with many other chamber groups, including The Ceruti Ensemble , London Saxophonic and Saxpak.

Recent years have included work in new Andrew Lloyd Webber productions, "Whistle Down The Wind", "The Beautiful Game", for which he was named in the Sunday Times review, “Bombay Dreams” and “The Woman In White”.  Other recent shows include “Sinatra At The London Palladium”,"Wicked", Lord Of The Rings" and at present, “Oliver”.

Apart from his appearances on hundreds of other peoples albums, he’s written and recorded for EMI’s KPM library and featured on solo Panpipe cd’s for Virgin, Crimson and Emi.

When The Boat Comes In sees Andy follow on from his first album, “Tracked”, with an even wider display of arrangements to highlight his instrumental virtuosity. The title track is a full version of the “Young’s” “Sea To Plate” TV jingle, which he recorded for the advert. A closer collaboration with Simon Haram has led to an adventurous collection of tracks along with the welcome addition of Dave Lee’s Horns & Wagner Tubas on a new composition by Marc Findon.

“When the Boat Comes In” is an eclectic compilation of songs that feature the very talented wind instrument musician Andy Findon. Andy’s virtuoso level of musicianship is evident throughout the CD. His arrangements are rich and multi-layered with an amazing number of different sounds blended together. The production and recording quality are very good. The songs vary greatly in style and genre, and include many songs/melodies that you will recognize, including the rock standard, Stairway to Heaven. The tracks are ordered in a manner that keeps your attention by taking you from one genre/tempo to an extremely different genre/tempo on the next track. We enjoy the fast-moving tracks the most, such as Molly on the Shore, Duelling Bamboos and Sabre Dance, which also includes some very creative style changes within the track. Whether you enjoy listening to the creative work of a musical master of his craft, or are particularly a fan of wind instruments such as flute and clarinet, you will enjoy this CD.
